Albert-Jan Pool
When it comes to DIN, Albert-Jan Pool’s the man to speak to. Years of experience and discussion of every DIN type standard have shaped his trained eye. Amongst typeface designers, he’s affectionately known as Albert-DIN Pool.
After studying in The Hague, he began his career as a type designer in 1987. Having gained experience as a type director at Scangraphic and URW, he embarked on his best-known work: FF DIN, a reinterpretation of DIN 1451 Mittelschrift. It was published in 1995 by FSI FontShop International. After co-founding the agency FarbTon Konzept und Design in 1999, he decided in 2005 to focus on teaching and typeface design.
Albert has shaped type design education at Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel for more than 20 years. With a passion for detail and ability to engage with their taste and abilities, he’s inspired many students’ lasting interest in type design. They include the TypeMates, Lisa Fischbach, Nils Thomsen and Jakob Runge; curve fanatic Philipp Neumeyer, as well as Julia Uplegger and Antonia Cornelius.
